Historic Places, Arts & Beautiful Scenery in Greater Bath County


Douthat State Park Douthat State Park has a 50-acre lake and is Virginia’s oldest state park. It has a beach, a bathhouse, boating facilities, fishing, hiking as well as a restaurant and lodge. There is a campground and cabins for rent. Some of the cabins were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930’s.

From Villas at The Meadows, turn right on Route 220 north, making right turn onto Route 39 east and travel to Route 629 south to Millboro.

Garth Newel Music Center The center presents Saturday and Sunday afternoon concerts July 4 through Labor Day. These concerts offer high quality chamber music in a charming and acoustically superior environment. A summer student program is offered and the Garth Newel Chamber Players are available for touring.

Jefferson Pools Two covered pools, a men’s and a women’s. The natural rock pools have temperatures of 98.6 degrees and are in their original 18th and 19th century structures. Open year-round, weather permitting, 10 am -7 pm. 839 -5346 From Villas at The Meadows, turn right on Route 220 north, located on left across from Homestead Farm just before Route 39 east.

Hidden Valley On the Jackson River west of Warm Springs (Rt 39 west), there is a 30 -unit campground and pre -Civil War plantation house, Warwickton, located on the property along with a family cemetery. The house is listed with the National Register of Historic Homes and was the site of the movie, “Sommersby.” There are fishing spots along the river and three walking trails. One trail is 7.5 miles, another 5.7 and the third is 1 .1 mile.

Lake Moomaw and the Gathright Dam This recreational area provides a wide variety of outdoor activities including swimming, boating, fishing, picnicking, hiking and camping. The lake covers 2,530 acres and has a shoreline of more than 43 miles. See diagram for travel directions. Travel Route 39 west, follow signs.
